RESOLUTION ON DEVELOPING LUMBINI AS AN INTERNATIONAL PEACE CITY

KATHMANDU, April 27: The legislature-parliament on Tuesday passed a resolution to direct the government to develop Lumbini, the birth place of Lord Buddha, as an International Peace City in the next three years.

The proposal which was tabled by tabled by Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Dip Kumar Upadhayay (Lamichhane), who represents from Kapilvastu district, was unanimously passed in parliament.

“The parliament directs the government to develop Lumbini and Kapilvastu, where Buddha spent his life, as an International Peace City by carrying out an integrated development plan comprising areas including Tilaurakot, Kudan, Gotihawa, Niglihawa, Araurakot, Sarhawa, Sisahaniya, Devdaha and Ramgram,” the resolution read.


The House also directed the government to mobilize national as well as international support to complete the Lumbini Development Master Plan and form a standing committee to monitor the progress on the implementation of the directive.

Minendra Rijal, minister for Constituent Assembly, Legislature Parliament and culture, informed the House that the government has proposed inclusion of Ramgram and Tilaurakot areas in the world heritage site.

He said 60 percent work of the Lumbini Development Master Plan has completed and additional Rs 12 billion is required to finish the project.

Rijal also informed the lawmakers that the government was preparing to announce International Buddha Peace Award.

Pradip Gyawali and Ram Nath Dhakal of CPN-UML, Sitadevi Poudel of UCPN (Maoist), among other lawmakers, backed the proposal.

Meanwhile, Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong tabled the bill on Truth and Reconciliation in parliament for deliberations.

Likewise, Minister for Industry, Mahendra Prasad Yadav, tabled the bill on Special Economic Zone for deliberations and Minister for Finance, Surendra Pandey, tabled a proposal to forward a bill on Banks and Financial Institutions for clause wise deliberations in the Statute Committee.
