[Posted today is a short article on Sushma Asur (from Sakhuwapani Gurdari Panchyat, Bishanpur, Gumla District of Jharkhand, India. She is the first creative writer from her community. "Asurs are also like human beings and by no means any so called ‘demons’ as depicted in traditional religious literatures", she asserts. She says that Dashain or Vijaya Dashami is a 'religious festival' of prejudice and discrimination against the Asurs. It must not be observed the way people do it until today. She is often invited to different programs and offered felicitations by those program organizers. She was the Chief Guest of Srawanotshav, an yearly public program organized last year by Santhals of West Bengal. The Santhals believe they are the progenies of Ravan. There are some Santhals in the eastern Tarai of Nepal today. And besides Chhatisgarh and Jharkhand in India, there are some Asurs in the Tarai of West Bengal also. In the ancient Mesopotamia, present day Northern Iraq, in 3000 BC, there was an Ashur, the war god considered the greatest among the gods in Assyria. Today is Mahanavami, the 9th day of Bada Dashain, Vijaya Dashami, Dashahara or Navaratri, being celebrated all over Nepal and some parts of India also. According to Devi Bhagvat Puran Goddess Durga killed Mahishasur in the evening of Mahanavami to secure Indra's Swrg or heaven which was forcibly snatched away by the latter. - The Blogger]
